When Spirituality Becomes a Status Symbol

Writer: Laura DownsLaura Downs

There’s something intoxicating about stepping into a space where everyone speaks the language of healing. Where people talk about “ascension” as if it’s a promotion they just landed. Where the energy is high, the conversations are deep, and it feels like you’ve finally found your people.

Conscious communities, spiritual retreats, plant medicine ceremonies, yoga teacher trainings - these are all places meant to facilitate growth and transformation. And sometimes they do. But just as often, they become something else entirely: a playground for the ego dressed up in sacred geometry and linen robes.

Chasing the High of “Higher Consciousness”

People love to talk about how spirituality isn’t a destination, yet many treat it like a mountaintop to be reached. A final level of enlightenment where they’re no longer burdened by the trivial concerns of the “unconscious” masses.

It starts with a powerful experience; maybe a weeklong retreat, a breathwork session, an ayahuasca ceremony. There’s an opening, an emotional release, a breakthrough. And in that moment, it feels real. The world shifts. You see life differently. You are different.

But then, instead of integrating that insight into the messy reality of daily life, the chase begins. The next workshop, the next guru, the next deep-dive into a healing modality that promises to unlock even greater levels of awareness. It’s not about being present - it’s about feeling enlightened.

The problem? When the external experience fades, the internal work still needs to be done. And rather than sitting with the discomfort of that, many people just book another retreat.

Spiritual Superiority

At a certain point, the language shifts. The person who once said, “I’m on a journey,” starts saying, “Most people just don’t get it.”

Spiritual superiority is one of the easiest traps to fall into because it feels like growth. You feel different, so you assume you are different - wiser, more aware, more evolved. You start seeing people through a lens of “high vibe” vs. “low vibe.” You filter relationships based on whether someone is “aligned” with your new reality.

What’s really happening? The ego is just putting on a new outfit. Instead of defining yourself by material success or intelligence, now you define yourself by how conscious you are. Instead of judging people for being uninformed, you judge them for being unawakened.

The irony? The people who are truly at peace don’t need to prove it.

The Failure to Integrate

The real test of spirituality isn’t how enlightened you feel in a curated, controlled space. It’s how you show up in the real world. Can you bring the same compassion, presence, and awareness into your relationships, your work, your daily life? Or do you only feel spiritual when the setting is just right?

Because here’s the thing: If the moment you step back into regular life you become irritable, impatient, or dismissive of people who “just don’t understand” your journey - did you really grow? Or did you just upgrade your self-image?

Growth isn’t about how many retreats you’ve attended. It’s about how you handle discomfort when there’s no guru or group circle to guide you through it.

What Real Spiritual Growth Looks Like

True spiritual work isn’t glamorous. It’s not just the highs of revelation - it’s the slow, unsexy process of applying what you’ve learned. It’s humility over superiority. Embodiment over performance. It’s realizing that the point was never to transcend being human, but to fully show up as one.

The ones who’ve actually integrated their experiences don’t need to tell you how enlightened they are. You just feel it in how they move through the world.
